also, Torah learning does include the Talmud and is part of basic Jewish theology – most of the quotes the antisemites take out of context are not accurate – best to challenge them head on, rather than try to pretend that the Talmud is “folklore” and not a part of Judaism.

I am not much into the Talmud though. I enjoy reading the Torah and all of the books of the Prophets. I think people have really upset me lately with USING and ABUSING the Talmud so that they HAVE indeed made me feel almost bad about reading it

We lost our way
In the 1920′s, my g-grandfather left Portugal- he fled because the forced indoctrinations went on in Portugal until the 1950′s! When he came here, NO RELIGION was practiced, of ANY sort. My great-grandmother always commented on her Jewry, but had also became a Christian in the 1950′s here in the states. So did my mother’s mother. My mother is FINALLY coming back to Judaism- this was after her best friend, Marsha told her that she was the best practicing Jewess that she had ever met- it made my mom feel so good, after many of my family members have tried to BULLY her into Christianity (myself included when I was young) and I feel BAD about this now
I encourage her continually about her Jewry, it is good, b/c she is finally feeling centered after 62 years in her life of being unbalanced. So, my family will get in TROUBLE if they keep messing with her! She has had NO SENSE of G-d, and that has pained me a LOT.
I have NO problems with Christianity, UNTIL they turn into dammed bullies and TRY to forcefully indoctrinate people!!! Loving and being loving is one thing, but FORCING people?? UNHEARD OF!

And getting back to the religion issue… I think God and religion are a completely different issue.
There has never been a religion that isn’t a little political or politics that isn’t a little bit religious…no one knows the hand of God.
Just my two cents: While I agree that according to Halacha a person is not religiously a Jew unless their mother is, a person who has a Jewish father and Gentile mother is still half-Jewish, ethnically speaking. I’m sure you’re not trying to claim that a person with only a Jewish father has no Jewish ancestry or lineage at all, because obviously that would be ridiculous.
The more I read of you, the more I see we have so much in common! I wish there were some way we could meet!
My situation is a little different, though, like your mom, mine was also a descendant of crypto-Jews.
My mom converted to Torah (“Orthodox”) Judaism in 1944, and met/married my father two years later. I was born in the late 1950s. My mother said she had been drawn to Judaism due to things that happened when she was a child, things I later learned reflected her crypto-Jewish ancestry, but she didn’t realize it (such as that my grandmother always lit two candles on Friday night with curtains drawn, but called it “an old family custom”; they refused to eat pork or shellfish; would not allow crucifixes in the home, she was called “Jew” in Catholic school, etc)
In the 1980s I got into genealogy and met up via the internet with a distant cousin on my mom’s side who had been to Italy and researched the entire family…he said to me, “Did you know our family is Jewish?”
I said, “well, I know my mom is but she is a convert”. That was when he sent me the paperwork and everything he got in Italy. Everything from my mom’s childhood now made sense!
What he found out was that my mom’s family was originally from Spain, left during the Sp Inquisition in 1492, went from this country to that, trying to find a place to call home without persecution, finally settling in Italy. Once there, the Inquisition caught up with them and they decided to go through the motions of becoming Catholic to keep from having to flee again…but they kept being Jewish in secret.
Over 500 yrs of this, their descendants evidently lost understanding of WHY they were practicing this or that ritual, but some of the rituals remained.
because of the similarities between what my grandmom did (Friday night candles, no pork, etc) and what my mom the convert did, I grew up thinking Italians and Jews were the same.
WHAT a shock I got as a teen when I met Italians from outside our family who ate pork, wore crucifixes and did not light candles on Friday night!
I still have trouble seeing Italians who eat pork and wear crucifixes as “really Italian”!
While I only practice Judaism (and always have), I have nothing but the greatest respect for the Christian faith, since that, too, is a part of my heritage.
I went through a stage (after finding out about my mother’s crypto-Jewish birth heritage) where I totally hated the Catholic church for doing what they did not only to my family, but to all Spanish Jews.
But I’ve calmed down since the years when I made that discovery (1980s), and have come to fully respect ALL sides of my unique heritage.
What’s more, my husband is a convert to Judaism from a Baptist background, and in our home we respect that too (even though our children are being raised 100% as Jews.)

His name is a reflection of his father’s african heritage, not his [Obama's] religion. I accept your right to free speech, but where is the logic in this bashing. Isn’t the main point of monotheism acceptance of one omniscient, omnipotent god? It is my understanding that you should hate the deed and not the breed, which can apply to humans just as well as dogs. Is your hatred of Islam only because you are a Jew? The Muslims and Jews have been killing one another for ages and I doubt it will stop because the fighting forces are too stubborn to see that no matter what name you call him/her/it, in whatever language, God is all and one. There is no “correct” god to worship. They are all the same. The difference lies in the customs of the people as ordered by the people in power.
You believe women are second-class citizens who didn’t build this country– men did. Well who bore those men? Who nursed them and taught them to be great? Fathers were there in most cases, but don’t disregard the mothers. There were many notable women in history who have done good for the USA by leaving the kitchen as well.
I am happy to be a housewife, but it’s great to know I could go back in the office if I wanted. Being free to decide is very important to most women in America– and even more women outside the borders of this country.
If God is love and only hates evil, it is understandable to hate it yourself as well, but when you say these things about women, it makes no sense. God made women just as intelligent as men. God made us [typically] more intuitive. To say that women have no place of greatness alongside men is like saying God was mistaken in giving us the gifts we are given.
Like I said, your right to free speech is what it is, but as a religious woman, the amount of venom in your words is just shocking and sad.

Very interesting blog, Mad. Although I was raised in a predominantly Christian household, my mother married a Jewish man when I was 11. We lived in the Five Towns and celebrated what we called “Chrismakkah”. I have always admired people who are true to their beliefs (and hate the ones who distort them for political and/or monetary purposes – such as Islamic Extremists who kill in the name of a god they don’t even truly believe in).
