This is getting to be a pattern. The only reason I can see is to gain control of American business.
Lets start with Diane Huang a small business owner in New Jersey was raided after winning bids on lobster tails from Honduras. There was an anonymous tip to the Fish and Wildlife Service about some lobster tails being undersized. Because of this, the shipment was detained and the DOJ raided Diane Huang’s business and residence. The crime according to the DOJ was the shipment arrived from Honduras in plastic bags not cardboard boxes. The DOJ claimed Hounding law prohibits the use of plastic bags when shipping lobster. Honduran officials said that was the law at one time but they no longer enforcing that law. They went on to say the shipment was approved and legal. This did not stop the DOJ from pressing charges, which resulted in large fines and an eight-year prison sentence.
Another is A440 Piano in Atlanta. Pascal Vieillard ( A440 Piano CEO) knew there was to be a shipment of 100 plus year old pianos coming in. This was important for the business as they specialize in restoration. There was substantial concern over the ivory in the keys. He could not get information within his shipping department or the exporters on how to document the age of the ivory. Law allows 100-year-old ivory to be both exported and imported as it predates any regulations protecting the elephants from poaching. However being unable to get proper information he contacted the CITES agency. They are the group regulating import and export of plants and animals and maintain a list of endangerd species and the proper methods of shipment.
His calls resulted in CITES calling the DOJ. The DOJ stopped his shipment and then raided his place of business with 23 armed agents. They ended up taking 11 pianos in the raid. After exhausting time in the courts, he was able to plead Guilty and receive a reduced sentence. After asking for help from the agencies who regulate such shipments trying to stay within the boundary of the law Pascal Vieillard was sentenced to the to three years on probation and ordered to pay a $17,500 fine.
Looking at the Government Bail out of GM gets messy as well. The Government takes to closing dealerships as part of the deal. Only the government closed profitable dealerships and left dealerships that were losing money open. What was the major difference besides the profits and losses the non union shops were closed wile union dealerships that were losing money stayed open.
We move on to Gibson. Gibson did finally settle. However, still to this day Gibson was not charged with a violation of the law. We had both Madagascar and India saying their Gibson exports did not violate any laws. In fact Gibson was subject to two separate raids spanning two years time, had millions of dollars removed from their possession and not one single criminal charge.
Gibson took the case to court in an attempt to get their wood back. this case drug on for an extended period of time costing Gibson millions of dollars. Remeber this case was over the first raid and the use of Madagascar ebony and rosewood, not the raid over wood from India. During the case the government did not go after Gibson on environmental issues as the media would like us to think. Instead they claimed Gibson was in violation of the valued added labor in Madagascar. In fact they told Gibson if they were to build guitars overseas there would be no trouble with the company at all. They also ignored companies using the same woods from the same locations ion this action.
This is a list of ignored American Guitar manufactures that were using similar wood to Gibson:
Fender, Taylor, Rickenbacker, Danelectro, Carvin, MusicMan, and ESP built in California;
Spector built in New York;
Martin built in Pennsylvania;
Guild, Ovation, and Hamer built in Connecticut;
Alvarez built in Missouri;
B.C. Rich built in Kentucky;
Heritage built in Michigan;
Washburn built in Illinois.
all of these are forced union states at the time of the raids.
In fact there is only one large non union guitar builder in America and that is Gibson,. Is this the real reason for the raid, Gibson moving to aright to work state? Lets look at the Administration’s actions on the Boeing South Carolina plant to answer that question.
I have NEVER seen such a Business Unfriendly Administration in my life. It makes me almost sure our economic and job crises are engineered to to weaken this country and bring in a different form of governance built on the people’s despair.
