I have hitchhiked the United States for most of 16 years. This ex-military guy picked me up in Wyoming and took me out to eat. We started talking about what if some country tried to invade the United States
If I wanted to invade the United States, I would go through California (Liberal Sewer West) or New York (Liberal Sewer East). I would NOT go through Texas, Arizona, Montana or Idaho. I have met more independent-mind people in Idaho than in any other place in America.
That ex-military guy told me that he knows of a gun shop in Wyoming that sold nine .50 caliber sniper rifles in two years. If I invaded America, I would avoid Wyoming at all costs.

I have hitchhiked through Arizona many times over the years. There is so much variety of landscape in that state. Met a lot of great people in Arizona. I worked in a lumber yard in Phoenix and in a warehouse in Mesa, AZ back in 1978-79. I have hitchhiked across the Navajo Reservation and through Flagstaff a number of times; really beautiful territory.
