The US has a controversial past with Myanmar. Following Ne Win’s coup in 1962, Washington secretly offered support, including with training and arms, as part of its policy to contain Chinese communism. (There is even suspicion of CIA involvement in the coup itself.) This means the US was an ally of the dictator in his military offensives against resistance groups, and his overall suppression of the public. The US studiously ignored the ethnic dimension in Myanmar, failing completely to condemn, much less counter, Ne Win’s massive human- rights abuses against the country’s ethnic minorities.
Burma was just one more example of the many countries where America backed dictators, sacrificing its supposed championship of freedom, democracy, and human rights. Case in point: Suu Kyi. The US , under different administrations, trumpeted its promotion of democracy, all the while doing nothing material to bring it about. The US did not use its political leverage to actually secure her release. WHY?
The American Carpetbaggers and Vultures zoomed in on Burma to feed on its abundant natural resources. After decades of seeing all the pro-democracy talk out of DC was only for show, the Burmese people are not fooled. Hence the constant shifting of goal posts in business, and hotel charges making a business foothold in Burma near impossible.
If the ardent wooing of Burma is to contain China, it is a failure. Burma is a land of ethniticities. Too many, in fact. And Suu Kyi ‘s support among the ethnic minorities, who in total may well comprise half the population, is falling, and in any case they have their own leaders. Suu Kyi has already demonstrated she will support Than Shwe and Thien Sien, and the Buddhist Monks who wield enormous power in this Buddhist land.
