Wrong, muse. Americans accepted being an entitlement people by successive governments. And now must pay in abundance for their folly.
As our collective “intelligence” and material comfort have increased, we are increasingly separated from the hard truths of life. We act as if real facts and real events and real political processes can be altered by the mind—by examining, diagnosing, explaining, reasoning, discussing, and designating certain others (officials, leaders) to deal with it. The ancient Greeks hung their weapons and armor on the wall, ready for instant use—constant reminders of what life was about. When we or our fellow humans are assaulted, or when our freedoms are attacked, we write letters. When, G-d forbid, our daughters are raped, we focus our actions on the person who did it rather than on the KINDS of people who do that—we are so “enlightened” that we wouldn’t want to stereotype! Justice (for we “enlightened” folks) is no longer getting even; it is properly following the rules of law. It will take much worse for us to walk out armed and in groups to settle the score, and not care about the consequences.

QV, Sadly, most young adults do not see what is happening because they are so bogged down with work and families. Only when they saw how you can get all the freebies and live better than you did when you worked, they go lazy. To be making your house payment and your neighbor not making his and getting all sorts of help. Doesn’t not make a country strong. To be honest I never saw it coming. I saw it too late. When the “poor” have as many as 3 or more phones that I am paying for does piss me off. I was taught that welfare is the worse club you could join. That club now is like a badge of honor. Where has our pride and desire to be a success gone? It is called the “nanny” state the next stop is tge end of the line. I hate what we have allowed to happen.
