I hope human beings quit mistreating each other and work to make every person feel part of the human family and loved and cared for as such. I hope we learn to live in harmony with the rest of nature. I hope we continue to learn and grow as a species and are able to pass this knowledge on in ways that alter the current equation of existence in that life is often “nasty, brutish, and short.”
I do not look to an entity that I consider mythological to bring about any change, but rather…if it is to be, it is up to me.
And for believers I pose this hypothetical question:
- If you were to arrive at the conclusion that we live and exist in a godless universe (not PROVE it, not FORCED to accept that view, but determined for YOURSELF that there was no CREDIBLE evidence for the existence of any god or gods and therefore the default position was the same for your views on the existence of say, leprechauns) how would you live your life from that point on?
Suicide? No limits? Rape, rob, murder, steal?
Try to (de)convert everyone else?
Go insane?
Or would you continue on pretty much as you do now? Love your family, or kids, or spouse, or significant other? Continue to partake in the joys, sorrows, and challenges that our lives entail?
Most believers I ask won’t even humor the question. It’s usually some version of, “God exists so the question is meaningless.”
I ask “Which god?”
They usually answer, “There is only one.”
This then digresses into figuring out accurately this supposed gods message for humanity.
I conclude that if god exists, and god wants humans to know of its existence and its blueprint for ours…then it has failed miserably because virtually NO ONE is on the same page.

Why The Bible Is Not “The Word Of God”
If you ask the major Christian denominations in the United States (or most Christians for that matter) “Who wrote the Bible?”, the answer you hear will likely be something similar to this: “The Bible is a collection of written documents that were authored by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Ultimately it was God, by way of the Holy Spirit, who wrote the Bible through human authors who brought their own unique backgrounds to the texts.” What they say may vary slightly from that, and from each other, but the gist is pretty much the same: The Holy Spirit (God) inspired the authors to write what they wrote. The main scripture they use to support this is 2 Peter 1:21 which says:
“for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God (NASB).”
In other words, the Bible itself is prophecy, and all prophecy comes from the Holy Spirit. Therefore, all of the theology, doctrines, and commanded actions within the scriptures are in fact commanded by God through the Holy Spirit. This is why you hear people talk about the “inspired” and “infallible” word of God. The only problem with this view is that the Bible actually does a pretty good job of showing that this is neither inspired nor infallible. We’ll just focus on the inspired part for now though, because once we see that it’s obviously not inspired, the infallible thing kind of takes care of itself.

When I see someone so very ignorant of non-beleif/unbelief, I take it upon myself to speak up. Believers have a sordid history of marginalizing, abusing, and so many other idignities and injustices from torture to murder that there is no protection from being silent.
Why should the government have *any* say in something so personal as one’s spiritual belief?
Yet our money has nonsense such as “IN GOD WE TRUST”. As an American, I should be part of that “WE”, yet I have no trust in any god or gods. I had an interesting discussion with students when I was the atheist advisor in the university’s Office of Religious Life (our universty was a trendsetter for choosing to include atheists among the pantheon of god-views). They explained the subtleties between unbelief and non-belief. I am without a belief in any god or gods (non-belief) while at the same time see no credible evidence for the existence of god or gods (unbelief) in just the same way I am without a belief in leprachauns and see no reason to justify a belief in their existence. As you cannot prove a negative, it would be inaccurate for me to say “I *know* there is no god”, but the lack of any rational uniform and consistent message from the supposed creator to its creations means that a sensible defaut position is to reject the claim as unsupported (more so if you look at the fruit of most Jesus believers).
Yet US christians are such an insecurfe group that they constantly demand governmental acknowledgement and kowtowing to the “almighty” while never putting into practice the more admirable teachings of Jesus. We stole the land from the original inhabitants and murdered many of them in the process. We (as a species) operate from an outdated evolutionary mapping that rewards aggression and naked self-interest. Believers wax poetic about heaven but are deathly afraid of crossing over to get there.
The meaning of life is that it ends. In that regard, you make your own meaning. That’s not the same as saying all is permitted. It’s acknowledging that all ethics are human derived, and as such evolve over time.

Most my friends are theists and most the theists are christian (though I have wonderful Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist co-workers and friends as well) My christian co-workers have told me on several occasions that I’m the most “christian” person they know. For a short time I was the interim president of the LA chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. I got along fine with god-views of all sorts because they didn’t want to see government dictating belief that is rightfully theirs to choose.
The 10 Commandments are a p!ss-poor way to try to govern. Hell, the pledge was originally written without the “under God” but was inserted as a contrast to “godless” communism. It’s just as idiotic to outlaw religious belief and practice unless there’s a compelling reason (and the reason would most always be the actions rather than the “belief” so prohibiting the belief would be like prohibiting a person from reading their horoscope).
Out of curiosity, could you name a few of the “good” christian leaders that you feel exemplify your apparent clear-cut recognition of who is or isn’t a believer worthy of the name? And if you go that route, then your politics would disgress more into arguing worthwhile sects and doctrines than the secular affairs of state.

Their beliefs are their own, not something to be incorpated as a basis for governance. Many were also slave owners (biblically condoned, no less) but most of us have jettisoned any reverence for that practice. You also have to remember that in the culture of the times, even non-believers had to play their cards close to the chest lest they suffer for their freethought.
