Few people realise that Saddam Hussein was actually a great ally of Israel. (The old Arab phrase is “The enemy of my enemy is my ALLY” – not “FRIEND”, as Westerners so often mis-translate it.) Iraq hated Iran (remember the Iran-Iraq war in the 80s?), they were a constant threat to the nuts in Tehran, and were perfectly willing to let fly with everything they had aimed at Tehran if Iran ever attacked Israel. (Saddam figured once the crap hit the fan, who was gonna pay attention to what came from where.) Taking out Iraq left Iran with only one enemy – Israel. (They can’t realistically threaten us, and they KNOW we can plaster them 6 ways from Tuesday if provoked.) So now we’re back to the glory days of the Cold War in the 70s, except substitute Iran for the USSR and Israel for Germany. If Iran attacks Israel, our only retribution course is MASSIVE pre-emptive attack (read: nuclear) to be certain we get their nukes before Iran launches against Israel, Iraq, Turkey, Greece, or any of the other several dozen prospective targets. Pity Bush 43 wasn’t QUITE as clever as his daddy.
