The Bill: H.R. 6383, Bed Bug Prevention and Mitigation Pilot Program Act
Annualized Cost: $1 million ($2 million over two years)
To combat a rising bed bug problem in Ohio, Congresswoman Jean Schmidt (OH-2) sponsored H.R. 6383. The bill would create a pilot program to buy pesticides and mattress covers, dispose of infested materials, and to monitor the situation. The Environmental Protection Agency would provide funds to Ohio’s Departments of Agriculture and Health, who would carry out the program and collect information on the program’s success.
Congresswoman Schmidt said “[b]ed bugs are a serious and growing issue as well as a major health concern…. We have a lot of work to do on getting a handle on this issue, but I am committed to assisting in whatever way I can to help regain control and mitigate the increase in bed bug infestation.”
